Ranelle Blake never looked forward to becoming an adult. In fact, as her
assignment day arrives after turning sixteen, she dreads what the
future might bring. Growing up unprivileged and orphaned in the
underground mining city of Ashbourne, her life wasn’t really her own.
After
Ranelle is assigned to the mining team of a privileged aristocrat, she
finds herself challenged in ways she never would have expected. Quickly
realizing that manual labor might not be the hardest part of her job,
Ranelle attempts to navigate the many complexities of mining life.
As
she struggles to adapt, Ranelle and her team members unexpectedly find
themselves trapped within the secret underbelly of their civilization.
Lost and cut off from home, Ranelle must help the others discover where a
mysterious trail leads before their supplies, light, and time run out.
